imbs2x The first few crystal clear notes of this song are extraordinarily powerful; they penetrate your senses in such a way that you do actually stop and listen, at least that was the effect they had on me. The musical journey commences as the blend of harmonies and traditional Celtic instruments evoke memories of sounds and landscapes you’ve surely experienced as well as a longing to reunite with the people you shared them with. A beautifully written song, performed with passion and perfection. Favorite track: Bottled Gas & Kerosene (keep this in your heart).

about

Transatlantic Trails
"Bottled Gas & Kerosene (keep this in your heart)"

Transatlantic Trails is a songwriting partnership between Jen Hajj of Idyllwild, California and Martin Praetorius from Germany, which they established when they first met on Inis Oirr, Co. Clare, in October 2014.

Some of the songs they wrote together are on Martin Praetorius' latest album "Tales from the Feverworld", but a whole bunch of others were supposed to be recorded in Ireland in 2020 for the duo's first full length album.

Those plans have been put on hold, for obvious reasons.

When Jen and Martin started realising this during a video chat, they got carried away, contemplating about things they had planned for the year, which included gigs in the USA and an epic road trip to the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas.

With those plans dissolving before their eyes, they started writing and finished the song a day later.
This song has now been produced and recorded, involving some of the finest musicians in Germany and also Keviñ Camus, an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Brittany, who Hajj and Praetorius met last September in Doolin, Co, Clare.

It's a song that fits the times, it's a song about hope and dreams, it is a song about travelling, friendship and great company and it takes the listener on a journey to a place of their longing.

Eoin O'Neill, who they met and played with at a session in Lahinch last autumn, gave the song a heartfelt kick-off on Clare FM, on his Sunday show on Sept 06..
It has since been played on Manx Radio, UK, on the Westwind on Clare FM, Midlands103, by Fiachna Ó Braonáin on RTE One and a couple of stations in the USA.

If you have a radio show - online or on the wireless - let us know and we will send you a broadcast copy via wetransfer.

Also, we encourage you to call in to your local, regional or national radio station and request the song and send them this link. We don't have a record/promotion company behind us.

This song is only available on Bandcamp.

lyrics

Bottled Gas & Kerosene
© Hajj/Praetorius

The glare of the headlights
The sound of the wheels
We are not there yet
But we know how it feels
The noise from the wipers
Is drowning out the radio
And the mountains in the distance
Are dusted with snow

We're on a slow drive
Through the drizzling rain
We're looking for the coastline
But we're looking in vain
Before the night comes falling
And we're stuck somewhere in between
We got to stock up on provisions
Bottled gas & kerosene

We put the main road behind us
The scenery is getting bigger
And the lanes are getting narrow
Fields and farmland
In the dimming of the day
The colours are fading
And as green becomes grey

There's the rain, the rain, the rain, the rain
And can you not smell the sea
We're getting closer to the coastline
And that's where we want to be
Before the night comes falling
And we're stuck somewhere in between
We got to stock up on provisions
Bottled gas & kerosene

Hold on to this feeling
Don't let it go
These times sure are a burden
And not what we used to know
And though "the best laid schemes of mice and men
Gang aft agley" *
We'll be returning to the circle
Of friends and company

And the craic will be mighty
And songs will be sung
Keep this in your heart
And keep on holding on
Before the night comes falling
And we're stuck somewhere in between
We got to stock up on provisions
Bottled gas & kerosene
